Server Stability Problems Today

It turns out we were a bit over-ambitious with the number of users enabled for multiple calendar sync. The conversion process went very smoothly over night, but when the load rose this morning (load peaks around 9am pacific time every day) the service hit an overload state. There could be unreliable service and short outages today as we deal with the situation. It's unlikely the problems will last beyond today. Apologies for the poor service today, we expect to have things back to normal very soon.

Thanks for your work guys. Nuevasync is a great service and we appreciate it. I still have no contacts, but hopefully things will be back soon. I'm surprised that a backup copy of contacts aren't kept locally on the iPhone for cases like this.

Nicolas said...

guys,

Your service is free and amazing, son don't be worry we're still with you!!!

One question : Contact seems to be down but all flag are green on my account page, is that normal ?

Thanks again

Nic (french user)

These things happen, but how you handle them is very important. People will be understanding if you continue to give us updates on the matter.

Oh, and NuevaSync is a wonderful service (when it works, which is 99% of the time for me). Thanks.

Iñigo Araiz said...

Nuevasync is awesome.

My contact list is empty right now but my contact flag is green and contacts still appear in Google Contacts, is this normal? will it be like this for long?

Thanks, and keep doing this as good as you do. Greetings from spain.

Olivier said...

Same here, my contact list is gone. Let's hope it doesn't last too long :)

Juan said...

I did not know of those issues, but after a pair of resyncs I have my calendars back.

No multicolor support, but I can access all my calendars events.

I hope it will improve, as your support is great 99% of the time

Neil Goldsworthy said...

Thanks for the update guys - I figured my problems were related to server loads, but all the status info indicated things were fine. I'll wait a little while and try again.

Great service!!

Ted Avery said...

My calendars sync the list of multiple calendars, but not the events themselves. Not complaining but letting you know :)

Edward said...

Now duplicates of all my calendar events are showing up on my iPhone...

thanks for keeping us up to date. You have a great service that I rely on. Thanks for making great software.

djl said...

Contacts are coming back for me--1PM CST.

Oláh Ottó said...

My contacts are still on my iPhone, but I haven't edited them, so probably it hasn't synced since the server problems.

My calendar is empty on the iPhone, probably it tried to sync whn I opened it.

Edward said...

Now about half my contacts are back, but I still have the calendar event dupe issue.

djl said...

I have 573 contacts on Gmail/Google and only 550 are showing up...what is odd is that most that are not showing up--my brother, close friends, etc--are those on my Gmail Most Contacted list...not all, but many.

Anonymous said...

Well worth the wait. This is a great service.

phrend said...

My Contacts are messed up as well - my iPhone shows no contacts, but my Google account still seems to have them all. I've tried turning them off and on again in the sync settings on my phone, and sometimes some of them sync over...

I guess I'll just sit tight and hope that you guys sort out whatever's broken.

Thanks!

jmvidal said...

Just noticed that all my contacts are gone. I did a re-sync but still nothing. Luckily I don't have anyone to call at this moment :-)

Damien said...

Thanks for you hard work guys. I have had some problems with my contacts this afternoon and my calendars this morning, but we are all still behind you 110%. This is a free service and I could not be more greatful for it.

By the way as I am typing my contacts are back all synced up!

Great work,
Thanks,
Damien

Unknown said...

I noticed that my address book is gone. And now my calendar too.
I wonder if tomorrow will be the same thing...
Anyway Nueavasync is awesome so I still say "Thank You"!

Tony said...

My contacts are working again, too.

Anonymous said...

The *only* solution that currently works for me. Email sync will complete the perfect circle and make Nuevasync the perfect solution (pay or free) for me.

My calendars are syncing with color, and my contacts are about 90% back right now.

Keep up the good work guys/gals!!!

Edward said...

I'm still missing my contact/calendar data, but I'm sure the situation will be resolved soon. Thank you to the nuevasync folks not only for this service but for working to get things back on track as quickly as you can.

Michael said...

Hey Guys, sorry to hear your day isn't going that smoothly. Thanks for the service and we know you'll get it up properly soon, server load can suck.

Out of curiosity do you know if this will change anything on Windows Mobile / Exchange phones? I'm going to be switching from iphone to an xperia next week.

Anonymous said...

I only have about half my contacts. I am hopeful that the site will be back soon. How about backing up your contacts so that if this happens the cell phone still has some contacts.

Unknown said...

I think the local backup feature is probably an apple firmware issue / request.

For those of you whose contacts have not returned, press "groups" on the top left then "all contacts" and they should reappear

thanks nuevasync, an amazing free service to rival apples mobileme. all we need now is push gmail and its perfect.

Cortland said...

I hope it comes back up soon! Today is my Birthday and I'm getting all kinds of texts... but from who!?!?! haha

phrend said...

Pressing "Groups" and then "All Contacts" had no effect on my iPhone. (I still don't have any contacts on my phone.)

I can see the little network spinner at the top of the screen every once in a while when I have my Contacts app open, so I know that my phone is trying to sync with NuevaSync... it's just not working.

Anonymous said...

I did that and lost all but 2 of my contacts. As long as I know they will come back it's OK, it is just somewhat frustrating. I agree however, that overall this is an excellent service.

Just signed up - but no syncing of Calendars yet.

The Calendars show up with a green status on the Nuevasync site, but nothing on the phone at all.

Have tried a few resyncs to no avail..

Guess I have to wait till the service is back up.

Just reported a fault with the contacts - I had noticed the change with the Calendar but had not experienced any outage. I now understand the issues with contacts. I agree with other comments about this being a great service and I know you'll get us all up and running soon. Well done!

Great, great, great service you guys provide. Thank you for acknowledging the problem and posting it here so I know I'm not the only one with the Contacts issue.

All my contacts disappeared today HELP. I had no idea nothing was stored on my phone anymore. LIked the service until now. Please let us know what you are doing to prevent this in the future as I cannot work right now without my contacts.

Tried re-syncing calendars this afternoon to get the multiple-calendar feature and lost all info in my iPhone calendar. Google end is still fine...

Guessing this is a server issue at your end - looking forward to having this work again!

Ryan R. Dlugosz said...

Same here - contacts & calendar info disappeared earlier this afternoon. Data in Google seems fine. Good luck with the fixes & thanks for a great service.

PS - I wish GMail had a better contact management system... one that could properly merge duplicates, etc would be nice. Perhaps that can be a future project for Nuevasync!

Scott Clark said...

To those who are complaining in a negative way - please check your credit card for charges from nuevasync...

oh wait, there are none... because it's friggin' free right now. And... it's beta.... so time to cut some slack.

Nuevasync - you rock.

For diagnostic purposes: My calendars are blank at present. Sync'd fine earlier today. Contact list has never been emptied.

Right now my contacts on iphone are still empty, but all there on google -- backing'em up right now just in case. Hope you are not down for too long. Now i wonder if there is a way to upload them to the iPhone "by hand" from a .csv or .vcf file.

FWIW, I got my calendars working at about 6:00 pm ET but the contacts are not working yet (it's now 8pm ET)

Not complaining. Compared to before I found Nuevasync, I'm still way ahead even with only half the functionality. Keep up the great product and you want some money put up a "donate now" button somewhere...

No calendar syncing on my end, though old calendar items from yesterday are intact on the iphone. No contact syncing, and my contacts list is completely empty.

Love the service and looking forward to getting this glitch take care of. Nuevasync is an essential service in my daily business and personal routines!

I'd second the suggestion that a "Donate Now" button might get some use--especially if it would help pay for the additional servers that might make this fantastic service even more reliable. Thanks!

My update: 8:40 pm EST and have calendar but do not have contacts yet.

Thanks for working on this!

Anonymous said...

Question #1: Is there any chance the google master contacts and calendar will be changed with this problem? (Will the empty database on the iPhone overwrite the database on google/gmail?)

Question #2: On my iPhone now, with the missing contacts, the texts, recent calls, etc. everything that pulls a name form the contacts database, is now just represented by the telephone number. Will that fix or is it all messed up even after the fix?

John Richards said...

For those who need immediate contact usage you can manually sync your google contacts to your iPhone from within iTunes. Just turn off the Nuevasync exchange account on your iPhone then plug in to iTunes and select Google Contacts as your contacts source.

Unknown said...

@JR

#1

Hasn't in all the time I've been using the service.

#2

When this all blows over and your contacts re-sync it should all go back to normal.

Unknown said...

thank you very much nueva.

Matt Dyson said...

Opposite way round to most, I've still got all my contacts, but absolutely no calendar at all.

Not whinging at all - I'd love all these bugs to get ironed out in the BETA, simply posting for debugging purposes ;-)

Cheers guys!

BVilly said...

No calendar for me as well. Sync status states my device has not contacted tthe server. Not complaining just providing an update.

vestini said...

Calendars back to normal.

Thanks for the quick fix.

Nuevasync rocks!

P.S. When you guys get bigger servers and bandwidth, you might offer total backup. As of present, you resync old calendar data only 3 weeks back, anything older is cancelled. But if you had the space for, say, a year's old info, users could use the calendar to look up old events, or as a pro-memoria by adding info to dates (like "XXX card renewed today").

Shawn said...

For another data point, my contacts are gone, and I have "some" dupe issues in the calendar (but am showing colors). I'm syncing contacts w/ Plaxo if that matters.

Eulah said...

Just providing an update. Able to recreate account on the iPhone and have it verify the exchange server (was not able to do that earlier). Still a blank calendar. 9:30 ET

Antoine said...

So is the server actually down or what. Nothing has been syncing for me all day. Has anyone from Nuevasync posted a reply. I like the service also but I only signed up yesterday so I'm patiently waiting for a fix

Anthony said...

Thanks for your excellent solution. My Calendar and Contacts are still missing. All status' on your site say all is ok, so will wait and watch. I just have fingers crossed that my empty calendar wont be sync'ed back to google and wipe the lot?

Unknown said...

My $.042:

I temporarily lost contacts earlier, but they sloooooooowly came back. The calendar entries I place via web on GCal eventually propagate to my iPod - within a couple of hours. I'm sure the servers are flagged, tongues wagging and eyes rolling back.

Thanks a million for everything - I'm patiently waiting for service restoration and would happily donate to the cause...

Unknown said...

Thank you for providing such a great service! I'm excited to see multiple calendar sync.

Unknown said...

Just updating situ ... Lost ALL contact info at 11:15 am Central time.

ReSynced and contacts came back around 11:30am. Lost ALL contacts again around 2:45 Central.

ReSynced many times with no luck ... 9:00 pm Central, still no contacts.

Thanks Nueva ... looking forward to better things tomorrow!

Anonymous said...

Since about noon today CST I've been loosing contacts until about 4pm until I lost them all. As of 9pm I still have no contacts but calendar looks file.

Unknown said...

Poop. I wish I would have read this post earlier and turned off my wifi. No contacts either. 9pm CST.

Nuevasync is super sweet. And free is extremely giving. Much appreciated for all y'alls work on the Nuevasync project.

Matt Dyson said...

Needed to get some contact info, so tried deleting the exchange server and re-adding. No joy - iPhone wouldn't even properly register it.

Hope problems won't continue for too much longer! I expect your server is taking a real battering though!

brandon said...

When the system fails, why is the default to delete all the contacts? I am probably oversimplifying this, but why doesn't it just leave all the existing contacts alone?

That has got to be the most frustrating part... If the existing contacts weren't touched during a failure I bet 90% of users wouldn't even realize there was downtime. (Calendar users would probably be more likely to notice though.)

Minh Chau said...

I have to main calendars, one is mine and the other is another person's. I've noticed that in the past 2 days, the default calendar would switch to the other person automatically so whatever event I enter into the calendar will be inputed into the other person's calendar as opposed to mine. I've tried resyncing, but by default, the default calendar is the other person's and not mine. I'm also missing some entries that are on my google cal, but not on my iphone...

Before all this, Nuevasync has been nothing but great! It still is, but I hope it goes back up and running soon! Thanks so much for all your hard work!

suburbanfarm said...

I am starting to think SOON is not soon enough. I need my contacts back. Starting to type them in manually as I no longer trust you guys with this. No response to multiple support requests as of 9:60 CST no contacts either...maybe next time instead of doing a total delete or clear of contacts if there is an issue just leave stuff alone or better yet allow for the data to reside on the iphone. Does anyone know if there is a way to sync contacts just like you sync music through your computer?

Minh Chau said...

Nelleke, try uploading your google contacts to Outlook, and then syncing Outlook contacts to the iphone via itunes. It'll just end up syncing all your google contacts - suggested ones and what not.

suburbanfarm said...

Here is a way to manually sync your calendar and you contacts using itunes
Microsoft Windows XP or Vista

1. Install iTunes 7.7 or later.
2. Connect your iPhone or iPod touch.
3. Select your iPhone or iPod touch in the device list.
4. Click the Info tab.
5. Select Sync contacts with.
6. Select Google Contacts.
7. Enter your Google Gmail ID and password, then click OK.
8. Sync your iPhone or iPod touch.

Hey there,

I was wondering when the your services would be back up? I was at least able to get to the www.nuevasync.com site, but now even that's down. I really, seriously love your service, it's a life saver. Which is why I am so heartbroken that I can't even reach the site, never mind login or actually sync something. BTW-- don't even really need the different colored calendar syncing capability. I thought I did, but I'd rather you guys were up and running that put you through the hassle. The default calendar is fine for me...

Ayman said...

Nelleke you need to chill. They are offering such a great service and FOR FREE! They are working hard to get our stuff back. Its not lost, its just not showing up. If you weren't to technologically illiterate then you would know how to be able to sync your contacts. yell at them if you were paying for it, not if they are give u something you always wanted/needed for FREE. its called technical difficulties, have some patience.

At 8pm I discovered your blog.... dope.

Thanks for the service guys.. I couldn't find my friends for lunch today, but I saved money there, and I saved money using Nuevasync !

I can still use the Safari Gmail to get contacts if I need them until you fix things.

Hey, would you guys consider a ChipIn and posting it on the blog... It would be awesome if had a place where we can make a donation contribution and say thanks for all your hard work.

Stefan said...

I don't know if this is a result of the server issues, but my calendar is BLANK. I've deleted and reinstalled the exchange account on my iPhone...I've deleted and recreated my NuevaSync account...and when I check the sync status page on their site it says that my phone has never contacted their server! Does anyone know how to manually have the phone check the server??? I've tried resyncing several times. It says it does it but I don't think it is.

Unknown said...

@Stefan - read through the comments. Everyone is having issues. Server is having issues.

Stefan said...

Ryan, thanks. I know the servers are having issues...I am wondering if there is a way to force my phone to at least communicate with their server (working or not) it does not appear to be doing so...

Unknown said...

@Stefan... actually, it would be a little bit involved, but you could export your contacts from Gmail, import them into Outlook, and then to a Manual Sync with your iPhone & PC through iTunes.

Actually, I might give this a shot and stop pinging the Nuevasync server with my iPhone for a while. I'll bet that they're getting a thousand sync requests every minute.

Anonymous said...

AHHHHH! I can't WORK without my contacts and my calendar...it's all GONE!!!! I'm totally ready to bail on you guys because without this service my ability to do my job and get paid is severely impacted!

Unknown said...

Oh wait, I would have to delete my exchange account to import my contacts through iTunes. I forgot. It's not that important to me (yet).

Stefan said...

Ryan. Good idea. I am only using NuevaSync for my calendar. I magically when I just resynced it at least loaded my calendar list. You're right about the pinging, I'll shut down the service on my phone and leave it off until tomorrow. Again, thanks.

Unknown said...

Hey everyone. This isn't a GREAT workaround, but I'm sure it would reduce the toll on the Nuevasync server.

If you are in great need your contacts & calendar.

1) Download the Google app from the app store.

2) Log in and you can see your calendar & contact info, make calls, search your contact directory, and more as long as you have an internet connection.

This will satisfy my need until Nuevasync is able to get back up and running again.

I was concerned, but they must have got their server up and running correctly again (or they aren't being hammered this early in the morning)

NuevaSync, Thank you so much for providing this free service that keeps getting better and better.

NuevaSync ROCKS!

Anonymous said...

I'd definitely donate as well. NuevaSync is more useful to me than MobileMe as all of my stuff is on Google and this solution is great.

2 things though:

#1: I am still missing some contacts. Is there a way to force a whole sync from Google to the iPhone? Like a refresh. Maybe this could be added to the web console under setup?

#2: When the server does go down (and working in IT I totally understand that this will happen) is there a way to prevent the contacts from disappearing?

Thanks for all the hard work. It must be a bit stressful for you at the mo, so keep in mind that lots of us love your work!

Cheers,

Damian.

Guys,

my problem is a bit different: Calendar and Contacts applications on my iPhone simply freeze after 10 seconds or so. What's more, I even cannot delete the Exchange account because an attemptto do this freezes Settings application as well...

Have you guys encountered that as well? It seems to be connected to the server overload but so far no one reported such behavior

Besides that, NuevaSync rocks!!!

Junn Kato said...

my problem is that my calendar does not seem to be syncing with the google calendar at all. items I have added using iCal on my mac have gone through to google calendar ok, but the connection between my ipod and google doesn't seem to be restored yet.

I woke up this morning and my contacts are back. Thanks, Nuevasync. I am very pleased with your service.

Dustin said...

I agree with the others who mentioned donations!

This service is great and I've only had problems twice since signing up (including this time). Service usually gets back up and running quickly enough. To those who are commenting negatively, remember, THIS IS A BETA SERVICE. It's EXPECTED that they'll have bugs from time to time. If you can't live with the occasional bugs, don't use a free beta service.

Additionally - iPhone users, the deletion of contacts and calendar events when the exchange service is not working is an iPhone thing, not a Nuevasync thing. For proof, I know of windows mobile users who are not being affected while my iPhone is doing the same thing that the rest of you are dealing with.

I have my calendar back and MOST of my contacts. Still missing a few.

Nuevasync - GREAT service. Can't wait til you're back up and running!

ALERT!!!

Michael Merker, delete your picture from your profile. It's on a secure part of your srver so it asks for a name/password!!!

Have you guys considered using Amazon Web Services and Amazon S3?

It might help with the server stability using their infrastructure. I've so many great thing about their service, that I'm thinking using it too to my projects.

Works great now. Thanks!

After reading that someone turned off and then back on their calendar/contacts sync on their iPhone and it all came up I gave that a try. Worked great for my contacts, but my calendar wouldn't come up. Then I looked again and somehow I had not turned the calendar back on. All is working fine for me.

I only have one calendar on there right now, so I can't speak to multiple calendars/colors, but it's great to have Nuevasync back up and running!

Still nothing.... Was thinking that I should perhaps delete the nuevasync account and start a new one fresh.

Have tried the turning off / turning on sync several times with the same result -- NOTHING....

Thoughts ?

@Steve - have you tried reauthorizing Nuevasync's access to your google contacts and google calendar?

I have my Calendars and my contacts back...however I do not show the different colors.

I have turned off sync and restarted it a couple times but its a no go. All my calendars are one color.

@DUSTIN
NOTHING STILL........

It is a great service. I canceled my MobileME for Nuevasync. When is the paid service scheduled to be released?

Dustin said...

@Steve - to clarify, you have done all of the following...?

Log in to Nuevasync and on your status page click "Setup" next to calendar and contacts and request account access.

On iPhone - go to settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars - tap on your Nuevasync account and then flip the on/off switches for contacts and calendars off (iPhone will respond by telling you it's turning them off) and then back on (iPhone will respond by telling you it's turning it on.)

Hope it doesn't sound like I'm insulting your intelligence...I just want to clarify that you've tried everything that I tried when it came to getting everything back up and running...

@ Dustin
Yup and Yup.
Thinking I should just close this account and open a new one here.

My calendar continues to work like a charm (no color though). Contacts are still empty. 11am PST. I'll go back to iTunes+gmail for contacts for the time being.

Thanks for working hard to debug this great service. My $20 is waiting for the donate button.

Calendar refuses to sync again. I'll see if there is a way to us iTunes+gmail to sync cals until this is fixed. 1pm PST
