Plaxo Again Not Working

Plaxo sync has been down for several days. Since we've not been able to resolve the issue with Plaxo. They say we're using their API excessively, but after a fair bit of work on our end (we added special rate-limiting code to our service, used packet sniffing and log file data to analyze our API use) we don't see any evidence of excessive traffic. Until we can correlate what Plaxo are seeing with something we have control over on our end that we can fix, unfortunately Plaxo sync will be down.
Google contact sync is working well, and it's not hard to export contacts from Plaxo and import to GMail.

So they say you're using their API excessively but don't provide you with any evidence? Plaxo always talks about being "open" so I'm surprised about this situation with sync.

What a surprise! I have never had a good experience with Plaxo since their inception and this is no exception.

I switched from Plaxo to Google Contacts yesterday, but have not been able to get my contacts to sync to the device. I switched off my contacts syncing, changed the setup on NuevaSync's page from Plaxo to Google, and started sync again. However, I get this mistake:

iPhone (ID: Appl83834PGFY7K), sync status is: ERROR (xx mins ago)

Error Diagnosis: Unknown error : please contact support

I sent a msg to support, but haven't heard. If I disable Contact sync, than Sync Status says OK, which I assume means it works for Calendar. But if I switch Contacts back on, same mistake as above. Should I redo the whole setup, delete account and restart, or what?

Now, I'm without any contacts, which kind of sucks.

Big fan of NuevaSync.

Penny-wise and pound-foolish, my Plaxo/Comcast friends. Plaxo should look at Google ("We do well when the Internet does well.") and decide what "excessive use" really is. I don't know exactly how big you guys are, but hourly sync of all of your customers is *not* excessive.

If you've got an API, support it. I'm switching to Google as my sync path.

Notwithstanding the fact that it (presumably) works, can you tell us what the limitations of Google contact syncing is.

Are there limits on what data/fields or contacts it will sync?

I think Plaxo is just using the excessive API use as a an excuse. Plaxo offers mobile sync also but at a monthly cost. I think they just don't like nuevasync for offering the same service for free.

I'm just about ready to swap from Plaxo to Google Contacts, but I'm interested why there seems to be a preference for Plaxo contact syncing over Google - or is that a false impression?

Is anyone else using Google Contacts for contact syncing & if so how are you getting on?

In another post you also mentioned something about another server-side contact syncing solution coming up. Can you tell us more about this. I don't have an urgent need to change just yet & I'm wondering whether I should wait.

Soocial is the other syncing solution I've considered. I'm using Nuevasync to sync Google Contacts and Calendar to my iPhone now and it's been smooth sailing so far. Now I'm just hoping for push email.

Google contacts works well with the exception of the "Suggested Contacts" which can be a bit annoying

kRIS,

i still get this issue:

Sync Status Report

iPhone (ID: Appl84835X5QY7K), sync status is: ERROR (3 minutes ago)

Error Diagnosis: Unknown error : please contact support

RRM,

My Google contacts are syncing without issue.

thanks Kris,
one last question - are all of your contacts in one list, i.e., my contacts or are they seperated? as in friends, co-workers etc?

Kris said...

RRM,

I did not initially have my contacts separated, but as I test I separated them into a few different groups and it caused no issues. If I remember correctly from another thread, the API does not distinguish the contacts in different groups which is also why the "Suggested Contacts" are included. Therefore I believe that it is not an issue with your categorization.

IS ANYONE ELSE GETTING THIS ISSUE WHEN SYNCING CONTACTS WITH GOOGLE? CALENDAR WORKS NO PROBLEM, JUST CONTACTS

Hello again,

What have you tried to remedy this problem? Have you deleted and redone the server?

Druggist said...

I get exactly the same problem with Calendar, I have tried stopping and restarting the service, initially the service wouldn't stop and I had to do a partial reset, but even though this allowed me to stop and restart the service, it still gave that same error.

druggist,
Your contacts sync without a problem, just calendar?
I've tried everything from reseting to deleting to opening a new gmail account to test contact sync there (that worked but not a real viable solution). Anyway, let me know what you coMe up with. Haven't heard from the nuevadync guys, though I imagine they're quite busy

Druggist said...

I only use it for calendar, so I don't know if it works for contacts, it seems to be an immediate error, as if the server rejects you, rather rather than an issue of the data being difficult to sync etc

Do you also have an iPhone?
