Plaxo Sync Down

Plaxo sync is currently not functioning.  Our servers are unable to communicate with their servers.  We are investigating the cause.  So far we do know that it is not our code and it is not our general Internet connectivity, but we are still looking into what is happening, and what we can do.  Stay tuned.

My experience with them says they've changed something on their side. Funny thing about Plaxo is it is Beta but Version 3. In a case like that I expect to see a stable V2.

Investigation shows that they are blocking our server IP addresses. We've asked Plaxo to explain. We're also working on code to allow us to disable Plaxo support permanently in the case that we can't get access to their API.

On the bright side... You'd have way more time to do the multiple calendar support for gcal! :P

BTW, I've never quite got why Plaxo is so liked... Seems kinda annoying to use to me. Is it just something you need to use for a week to appreciate it?

Multiple calendar support is nearly done.
Plaxo is great because your contacts' information is automatically updated. For example someone you know moves to a new company and changes their work phone number. They update their information and the change automatically propagates to your address book.
OTOH the fact that they're blocking our traffic sucks big time. We will be announcing support for an alternative contacts service soon.

Just a side comment, since I am new to this service. I have a MacBook at home, Outlook (POP) at work and an iPhone. I have multiple email accounts I host myself. This is the best thing I have found to manage all of this and my hat's off to you for this excellent development!

Just found this service today, only to find plaxo sync was down. Big bummer, I hope you guys can get the issues worked out with them. Great service!

@david boreham - Since multiple calendar support is "nearly done".... Are you guys needing any beta testers? :) I'd love to help you guys out.. Nuevasync is the best thing that's ever happened to my iPhone! :D

Re: Plaxo - have they blocked you for good? or, is it just some dumb admin who didn't realize that 3rd party services like this encourage people to PAY for premium subscriptions to places like Plaxo and Google Apps Premium edition, etc.. Just my 2-cents...

@david:
We will be introducing multi-cal first on a separate test server that will require a test account registration, since the code changes are significant. We'll announce the details here.
We've been in contact with Plaxo and so far no response on why they cut us off, so it's reasonable to assume it was deliberate. Our plan is to remove Plaxo functionality from the service. This requires some new code since we can't simply turn it off.

Remove Plaxo would be an argument to cancel my usage of nuevasync. I would be very disappointed if you do so...

David said...

@bastian Well, I don't really think it's nuevasync's fault: try writing to plaxo and complaining!

@david boreham Well, if you need a tester, let me know! I'd be happy to setup a new test account if needed. Of course, in my dream world, being able to not sync contacts without a phone number or name would be amazing too!

I'm not sure what motivates Plaxo but we have a fairly high profile at this point so the likely explanation is that they don't want our users to sync. Perhaps they're planning their own iPhone sync service. Plaxo is free and their API terms of service include terms that imply that if you're making money then you need to pay them (which we aren't of course).
Anyway, since we have several of Plaxo's competitors actively requesting that we add support for their contacts services, while Plaxo bocks our connections, you can see where our priorities lie.

Ok, some progress on this. It turns out that Plaxo and us mis-communicated (the e-mail went to /dev/null for some reason). There is no evil plot, but we have tripped some excessive traffic level breaker at Plaxo, which then blocks traffic for 24 hours. We're working with Plaxo to resolve the issue.

ok, that's great news!
I am currently not aware of any other solution which can do over the air synchronisation of my contact with my iphone. It would be a nightmare if that one would die out.

Bastian Fischer said...

@david: you´re right - just wanted to say that plaxo is very important for me and many other users and a great service from nuevasync to support plaxo. Therefore they should not give up solving the problem...

It's a relief that Plaxo isn't deliberately blocking you. To paraphrase a common expression, "never ascribe to malice that which can be explained by technical glitches." I finally signed up with Plaxo after a few influential friends had been using it and I just discovered Nuevasync. They would appear to be a potent combination and I'm glad to hear that Plaxo sync should be working again soon.

Hi, Tried emailing support@neuvasync.com but getting delivery service delay/failure so will try here:

I have a new iphone 2.1 3g.
I have done everything suggested in the sync site and on other forums and my device doesn't sync.

When i put a calendar event into my iphone and try and reset the calendar sync by turning it off then on again on my iphone it deletes the event on the phone (as you explained that it would during a sync) but no google events arrive on my phone and my contacts are still there.

Can you suggest anything

David Boreham said...

Mr. Spoon:
can you send the e-mail bounce message to info@nuevasync.com please ? Support mail is working, but we'd like to investigate why you can't get through.
There should be no need to reset sync. Check the sync status page (linked from the troubleshooting page) for errors. If it says your devices have never contacted our service then there's a config error on the device (wrong username, server host name, etc).

My Fault regarding above problems.
I was spelling NuevsSync wrong!

Great Product.

Is there any word on a restore to working order? My calendar and contacts were freezing up so I reset my settings and was hoping a resync would fix everything (as it did last time when I accidentally added another calendar making the iphone freeze like crazy). Unfortunately I did this the day the Plaxo server block happened and now I don't have any contacts on my phone at all. I keep holding out hoping for a restore, but if there isn't one soon I'm going to have to try and find another solution so I can get my contacts on the iphone again

My contacts and calendar are freezing. Is this a problem that looks to be resolved. Or should I try something different. Thanks.

Zulunia said...

Calendar by itself seems to be okay, but there's an issue with contacts still with Plaxo connections.

I think everyone's in the same boat for now.

David Boreham said...

We expect the Plaxo problems to be resolved tomorrow.

my calendar and contact are freezing too... i don't use sync to plaxo, i only have a google-accunt. but since yesterday i can't use my calendar and contacts on my iphone.
is it my fault or is the reason by nuevasync?

David Boreham said...

Please see the post 'iPhone 2.1 Freezing Update'. A full and final fix needs the iPhone 2.2 firmware update, which hasn't been released yet.

Thanks for the update. I look forward to having this working again.

Thanks for letting know. I was trying to figure out why my sync to Thunderbird and Outlook is not working.

Any update available about the Plaxo sync problem?

Can anyone suggest a different online contacts manager other than MSN or Google's built in features that is supported by iphones?
